Why is disability awareness important?

There are currently 14.1 million disabled people in the UK, of which 8% are children, 19% are working age, and 45% are of pension age (Scope 2018). Society has moved on a lot in the last few years and great strides have been made to support this very important group in accessing goods and services. There has been a notable increase in the numbers of disabled people who are becoming more confident to access local services and activities, which is great to see. However, there is on occasion still a lack of knowledge by the public in understanding disabilities and how best to support people. This introductory course introduces people to the different types of disabilities, the barriers people might face and the correct communication. It has been produced by disabled people themselves and provides lived experiences and examples. The course is aimed at anyone wanting to gain a better understanding of disability, especially customer-facing staff and third sector workers and volunteers.
