Why Inclusive Sport is Important

Sport is important for everyone, not only for a person’s health but also for their wellbeing, and this is no different for a disabled child or person. There are over 53% of disabled children in mainstream schools, but they don’t all have the chance to experience physical education or sport. There are many factors that mean some disabled people cannot access sport like their peers and some of these include, lack of confidence from the teacher or coach, not knowing how to adapt the session to suit everyone’s needs and worried the disabled person might hurt themselves, just to name a few. After the positive exposure of para-sport in the UK following London 2012 Paralympic Games, this course introduces you to some of the simple approaches you can use to make your sessions inclusive, accessible and fun for all. It has been developed by a deliverer that has worked in Para sport for over 20 years. Claire first started as an athlete, then a coach and more recently a tutor and now classifier. Claire will share with you some of her challenges and experiences, showing you what is possible with a little trial and error and some fun along the way. The course is aimed at anyone wanting to gain confidence in delivering accessible sports sessions, whether in school or in a community environment.
