Why disability in the workplace important?

There are currently 14.1 million disabled people in the UK, of which 8% are children, 19% are working age, and 45% are of pension age (Scope 2018). Many disabled adults want to be employed, but it is sometimes hard to gain employment. There are many reasons for this, including a lack of understanding by employers, preconceptions that employing disabled people cost more than a non-disabled employee, and disabled people will require or need more time off. This is not always the case and disabled people can bring many benefits to an organisation. This course introduces people to the different types of disabilities, the barriers people might face the correct communication, what a disabled person can bring to an organisation and what you as an employer can do to support your disabled employers. It has been produced by disabled people themselves and provides lived experiences and examples. The course is aimed at Human Resources and any employer wanting to expand their knowledge.
